Here at the Surf and Sand Inn, we’ve been welcoming lodgers since the 1940s – first as a U.S. Coast Guard lookout station, and, today, as a casual, comfortable motor lodge with a retro beach vibe and a host of modern conveniences. We’re footsteps from shopping, dining and the mighty Pacific Ocean; and Cape Kiwanda, Haystack Rock and the original Pelican Brewing Company are a short drive or bike ride away. We work hard to offer the friendliest service and best value in Pacific City. Join us for your next beach vacation and see why we’re one of the top-rated motels on the Oregon Coast.

A perfect room for every stay.

Every room at Surf & Sand is clean, comfortable and super-convenient, outfitted with a flatscreen TV, microwave, coffeemaker, mini-fridge, high-speed wifi and more than 90 cable channels. We deep clean before every arrival, and our housekeeping manager signs off on every room before you check in. That's probably why guest reviews frequently mention the pristinely clean quality of our rooms.

We offer a wide variety of room types including wallet-friendly standard rooms as well as kitchenettes and even a full-fledged apartment. Odds are, we have the right room for you whether you're visiting for business or pleasure, alone or with a group. Every room is ground-level, providing for easy access (and freedom from noisy upstairs neighbors).

Historic and hip.

Every room at Surf & Sand offers engaging echoes from the past — vintage travel posters, classic beach art and even retro record players. You can check out LPs or a beach read from our front office library.

Pet-, people- and budget-friendly.

For decades, we’ve been family owned and operated; and you’ll feel a sense of familial warmth in every interaction with our team. Even our booking terms are friendly: We have a generous 48-hour free-cancelation policy, and we don’t charge your credit card until check in time. We offer free bike storage and plenty of free parking for RVs, trucks and boats. Pets are always welcome (for a fee)! We also offer deep discounts for:

GEM OF THE COAST. Adorable, charming, cute, clean, appointed well! Sixteen rooms surrounding a parking courtyard. Beautiful floral hanging baskets in front of each room. Equipped with retro-looking microwave and record player! LPs are available at the front office! Large, fluffy linens and comfortable bed. We are seniors and reminded us of the type of place our parents would have stayed in the 50s. Loved our short stay and will return someday."

EXCELLENT. The perfect quaint motel for our quick stop in Pacific city. Walkable to restaurants and the main downtown area, but away from the cluster of the north end. Walkable to the state park beach. Hotel was very clean and plenty of amenities. Comfortable beds. We will definitely be staying there again next time we’re in town."

Pacific City:

Oregon's classic beach town.

We’re located in the heart of historic Pacific City — one of Oregon’s last authentic, untamed beach towns. We think of it as a hidden gem — a rural community steeped in history and tradition with more than a dozen restaurants and plenty to do and see. Fishermen still flock to the banks of the grand Nestucca River (just one block away), and craftsmen still tend to the region’s famed dory boats in a neighboring drydock. Located on the Oregon Coast Bicycle Route and the Federal Scenic Byway System, the town offers proximity to several must-see attractions:

THE MAJESTIC CAPE KIWANDA SAND DUNE

This sandstone headland offers one of the best viewpoints on the coast for witnessing the ocean's power. After a steep climb up the towering dune, you'll see sweeping vistas of waves pummeling rugged, twisting rocks. Amidst the fragile sandstone rock, the ocean is constantly eroding and re-sculpting the entire scene, right before your eyes. Click the play button above to see some spectacular drone footage of the area, shot by our friend Arthur Chenko.

NESTUCCA RIVER & OTHER OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

The Nestucca flows just one block from Surf & Sand -- a beautiful, busy spot where the river meets the sea. Kayak or fish on the river (like the folks in the video above) or embark on another outdoor adventure. You can even ride a camel in Pacific City! To help you weigh all your options, we provide one of the best collections of tourist publications and brochures in town.

A history of hospitality.

The Surf & Sand began life some 75 years ago as Tillamook County’s U.S. Coast Guard lookout station, a purpose it served throughout World War II. When the government sold the property, it evolved into a motel and apartment complex known as the Ford Motor Court.

In the 1980s, a local businessman made extensive renovations and re-opened the building as a motel. We’re told that the ’80s were a wild time in Pacific City, with all sorts of unsavory characters making deals around town. In this midst of all that drama, the property was seized by the State of Oregon and sold at auction in 1988. A family purchased the property and renamed it The Inn at Pacific City.

In 1993 the Inn was bought by Doug and Patti Olson, who established a lasting reputation for value and customer satisfaction. Doug and Patti have become pillars of the local community. It’s hard to find anyone in Pacific City who doesn’t regard the couple as close friends.

In 2016, Alex and Ronel Ponot purchased the property, renamed it the Surf & Sand and set about building on the Olson’s tradition of service and value. They made physical and technological improvements, developed stringent cleaning standards and added a charismatic international flair to the operation before moving on to manage a property in Europe.

The Ponots made a lasting contribution to Surf & Sand when they hired Justin and Julia six years ago. The couple is still here today running the show. They, in partnership with new owners Lynn and Josh, continue to make  cleanliness and friendliness their top priority while adding flourishes that celebrate the inn’s rich 75-year history and highlight the era in which it was built.

Meanwhile, the inn’s previous owners, the Olsons, still live right across the street and are known to greet new inn guests with a wave from their front window. (Old hospitality habits, it seems, are hard to break.)

We all look forward to welcoming you on your next visit!

Committed to sustainability and community.

We Help Generate Cleaner Electricity
The Surf & Sand team is proud to be the first and only hospitality partner to support our county’s Green Power Program. We pay higher electricity rates to support Tillamook’s digester facility, which generates clean energy while reducing the amount of methane gasses released into the air and improving water quality by decreasing the volume of waste deposited on fields.

We Help Clean the World
We proudly provide supplies and financial support to Clean the World, which saves lives by recycling soap and other discarded hygiene products, preventing disease with materials  that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

We Help Provide Affordable Housing
We support Habitat for Humanity Restore, which diverts reusable household items and building materials from area landfills. Sales of donated items help local families build, rehabilitate and repair safe and affordable homes in communities around the world.

We Help our Fellow Hospitality Workers
We support the Oregon Hospitality Foundation, which provides educational opportunities and job training programs as part of its mission to support the workforce, educational, training, and philanthropic needs of Oregon’s hospitality industry.

We Help Fortify Pacific City
We’re a member of the Pacific City Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce, an organization of business and professional people and citizens working together to stimulate a prosperous business environment as well as civic, social, cultural and educational aspects for a more vibrant community.

We Support Oregon’s Farm Families
We’re a member of the Oregon Farm Bureau, which helps farm and ranch families keep Oregon green and remain good caretakers of land, water, and animals. In addition to connecting farmers with charities such as Farmers Ending Hunger and the Ronald McDonald House, they provide about $70,000 per year in scholarships to students from across the state.

We Support Local Education
We support the Nestucca Valley Lions Club Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships annually to two graduating seniors from nearby Nestucca High School.

We Help Train the Local Workforce
Whenever possible, we seek employees through WorkSource Oregon is a statewide partnership with the Oregon Employment Department and state, local, and nonprofit agencies. They provide a variety of employment and training services to job seekers and employers in Oregon.
